| Kilauea Volcano Erupts on Hawaii’s Big Island |

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted on May 3rd, 2018. Lava and fumes continue to spew, with over 30 structures destroyed and fissures continuing to form. TripAssure extends condolences to those impacted by this tragedy, and is reminding clients how TripAssure plans can help in this type of situation.

This volcanic eruption can be considered for coverage by TripAssure travel protection plans purchased on or before May 2nd, 2018.

TripAssure considers the volcanic eruption both a weather related event and a natural disaster. The following coverages can apply:

  • Emergency Medical – Travelers injured by the eruption or ash cloud can be covered for the costs of emergency medical treatment.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation – Medical transportation can be covered from the point of injury to the closest hospital, and, if deemed necessary after treatment, back to the traveler’s home hospital.
  • Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption –These coverages can reimburse the pre-paid, unused trip costs that aren’t refunded. For those who haven’t started their trip to Hawaii’s Big Island, Trip Cancellation coverage may be available. If the trip is underway, and the destination is impacted, Trip Interruption coverage can also reimburse last minute transportation to come home early. TripAssure plans can provide Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for the following reasons related to this event:
    • The accommodation at the destination or your primary residence is made Uninhabitable and remains Uninhabitable as defined during your scheduled Trip. The loss must occur within 10 days of departure.
    • Your place of employment is rendered unsuitable for business, and you are required to work as a result.
    • A government-mandated shutdown of an airport or air traffic control system.
    • A mandatory evacuation is issued, and when lifted only 50% or less or 4 days or less of the trip remains.
    • A traveler is called into military, fire or police duty to assist with the natural disaster.
    • Flight cancellation or delay of 12 hours or more due to inclement weather
    • For Trip Cancellation coverage only, a common carrier delay causes 50% or more of the trip to be missed.
  • Missed Connection – If the traveler is delayed 3 hours or more, due to a natural disaster, you can be reimbursed additional transportation to catch up to the trip, as well as pre-paid, unused trip costs that aren’t refunded.
  • Trip Delay – Similar to Missed Connection, after a 6 hour delay, Trip Delay can reimburse accommodation, local transportation and meal expenses during the delay up to the daily limit.
